The Department of Health and Human Services Office of
Inspector General (OIG) has released a memo
with preliminary results from an ongoing review of potential abuse or neglect
of Medicare beneficiaries in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). OIG determined
that CMS has inadequate
procedures to ensure that incidents of potential abuse or neglect of Medicare
beneficiaries residing in SNFs are identified and reported. The memo contains
suggestions for immediate actions that CMS can take to ensure better protection
of vulnerable beneficiaries. There will be a forthcoming final report.
The National Association of Attorneys General (NAAG) has announced
a new initiative to identify and combat elder abuse. This is separate from
the Department of Justice's Elder Justice Task Force, but has similar goals. The focus
will likely vary by state depending on each Attorney General’s priorities.
