CMS Directs MACs to Suspend Posting Revised or New Local Policies

Dan Ciolek

Recently, Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) have been cancelling open meetings and Contractor Advisory Committee (CAC) meetings that are typically used as part of the process to develop and disseminate information pertaining to new or revised local coverage policy. Concurrently, a number of the MAC websites (e.g. Cahaba GBA)  have posted information that indicates that CMS “…has instructed all MACs to not post new or revised Local Coverage Determinations (LCDs) or Local Coverage Articles (LCAs) until further notice.”

It is believed that this pause in local coverage policy development is associated with the President’s regulatory reform agenda and Executive Order to “alleviate unnecessary regulatory burdens…” and that the local coverage policy development process will resume later this year, once the new CMS administrator has had the opportunity to review and revise that policy development process as necessary.
