SNF PEPPER Target Area Change

Dianne De La Mare

TMF Health Quality Institute, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) contractor that develops and maintains Medicare fee-for-service comparative data (PEPPER) reports, has indicated to AHCA that the next SNF PEPPER rollout (sometime in April 2016) will not include the “Therapy RUGs” category. CMS is not interested in tracking therapy generally in SNFs; but instead, will continue to focus on SNF therapy in the ultra-high therapy Resource Utilization Groups (RUGs), according to TMF. The SNF PEPPER data released in April will include “Therapy RUGs with High ADL,” Nontherapy RUGS with High ADL,” “Change of Therapy Assessment,” “Ultrahigh Therapy RUGs,” and “90+ Day Episodes of Care.”

To obtain more information regarding the SNF PEPPER, or to access your current PEPPER if you’ve not yet done so, go to https://www.pepperresources.org/, and find “Skilled Nursing Facilities” at the bottom of the page.
