CMS Reminds Providers of ‘April Fool’s Day’ Part B Medicare Cuts Unless Congress Acts on SGR

Dan Ciolek

Recently, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) issued MLN Article MM9104 – Quarterly Update to the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule Database (MPFSDB) - April Calendar Year (CY) 2015 Update. This reminds providers and contractors that unless Congress acts to correct the flawed sustainable growth rate (SGR) formula before March 31st, CMS will cut Part B payments to providers, including those for therapy services by 21.6 percent from current rates.

In most prior years, Congress has taken action to avert large across-the-board reductions in Provider Fee Schedule rates before they went into effect. In this article, CMS again states that the agency supports legislation to permanently change the SGR to provide more stability for Medicare beneficiaries and providers while promoting efficient, high quality care.
