Adult Immunization Schedule

Holly Harmon

The updated 2015 recommended Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) adult immunization schedule is available online at CDC’s website at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/hcp/adult.html and was published February 3, 2015 in the Annals of Internal Medicine annals.org/article.aspx?articleid=2107750

The main change in the 2015 adult immunization schedule from the 2014 schedule is the recommendation that adults ages 65 years or older receive pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13, Prevnar-13®) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23, Pneumovax®23) in series. Both PCV13 and PPSV23 are needed for best protection against pneumococcal disease such as meningitis and bloodstream infections; in addition, PCV13 provides protection against pneumococcal pneumonia. Consult the 2015 adult immunization schedule at www.cdc.gov/vaccines/schedules/hcp/adult.html for pneumococcal vaccination timing and intervals.
