HIPAA Omnibus Rule Final Deadline Looming

Dianne De La Mare

The US Department of Health and Human Services, Office for Civil Rights (OCR) released a final Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Omnibus rule in 2013. However, all HIPAA covered entities and business associates must meet the September 22, 2014 deadline to revise business associate agreements that were already in place when the HIPAA Omnibus Rule was first published on January 25, 2013.

HIPAA covered entities, including both nursing and assisted living facilities, should review all of their existing business associate agreements to ensure they’re compliant on September 22nd. If the contracts are not compliant, then providers should renegotiate those agreements and revise them by the deadline.
