Capitol Hill Briefing on Observation Stays Issue

By Dana Halvorson

This Friday, December 6, the Alliance For Health Reform  and the AARP Public Policy Institute are sponsoring a briefing entitled, “Am I in the Hospital or Not? Why Hospitals are 'Observing'-Not Admitting-Patients.”  This lunch briefing will be held from 12:15 to 2:00pm EST in the Dirksen Senate Office Building, room G-50.  The briefing will address, among other issues, how prevalent observation status is and the rate it is increasing.  Other questions to be addressed include:  What challenges are hospitals facing to comply with state law and federal rules regarding hospital admissions?  What administrative solutions are being tried by Medicare?  What is the "two-midnight" rule and how does it work?  What does it all mean for out-of-pocket costs to beneficiaries?  A distinguished panel of experts will address these and related questions.  You can follow the briefing on Twitter: #ObservationStatus or register for attending in person by clicking here.  For more information about observation stays, please visit the AHCA/NCAL website.
